With regard to sanctuaries - Do your homework!
While reading about yet another "sanctuary" possibly facing charges for negligence / animal cruelty, it occurred to me that there are a lot of animal lovers who simply do not know the difference between a legitimate sanctuary and roadside zoo.
Most substandard zoos operators have learned the jargon and know how to promote their facility by claiming they are "rescuing abused animals" or participating in a rehabilitation program.
Another favorite claim is that they are a part of a licensed 'capture and release' program. This is always a favorite because you can almost always ask specific questions to which they never have solid answers (or can cite one instance of successful release - with the exception of local wildlife, such as squirrels or raccoons).
In light of all this weasel wording, it's tough for disillusioned donors to know who to trust.
I have found one source to be quite reliable: The Association of Sanctuaries (TAOS). They are both knowledgeable about the trade in exotic and wild animals and have qualified professionals on board to assess the quality of interested sanctuaries.
They have a list posted online of all of those sanctuaries that provide good husbandry practices, behavioural enrichment, and qualified staff who have specialized knowledge in dealing with the species they house.
Check them out and put your support behind sanctuaries that are truly making a difference in the lives of exotic and wild animals.

I rescued a unbrella cockatoo and she should have never been sold. She is a flock bird and hates being alone with no other birds like her around. Yes I own an exotic animal BUT I always discourage people from purchasing one. They were meant to live in the jungle not in a metal cage with stupid people toys...I was glad to hear Petco isn't going to be selling the large birds anymore!!

Dear Aleah,
One of the article groups on my site is Home and Family ... while searching for details on pets, I came across With regard to sanctuaries - Do your homework! .
It is widely accepted that a lot of the best articles on the internet is created by individuals who blog ... good quality content without the bias and waffle often found elsewhere.
Judging by your blog content I believe you are interested in pets, and will therefore find our Home and Family category to be of interest. I am frequently looking for individuals to submit articles on their pet subjects and help me to build the directory to everyone's benefit. As a contributor, you get the recognition of having your article published and seen by thousands of web users. The pride and satisfaction of seeing your article published in a prestige directory is hard to beat.
Few of us are gifted with the ability to write to professional standards of grammatical correctness ... as a result, many bloggers don't bother to have their articles published.
I accept articles written in an informal style that matches your personality and fits in with your article content. I also welcome articles that are uniquely based on your personal knowledge, experiences and opinions. All I ask is that your articles do not contain vulgar language, incite hatred or generally offensive.
There are no costs involved ... please come over and have a look at my blog articles directory for yourself.
Kind Wishes
Emily
